Designing an Organized Home from the Start: A Mineral Point, WI Case Study

At The Marshall Method, my work has always centered on one core belief: an organized home should support your life—not complicate it. True organization isn’t about perfection or rigid systems. It’s about designing spaces that feel intuitive, calm, and sustainable for the people who live in them.

Most of my projects as a professional home organizer begin after a home is already built. I step into existing kitchens, closets, basements, and garages and help clients declutter, create functional storage systems, and reclaim a sense of ease in their daily routines. But every so often, a project comes along that allows organization to begin before the first box is unpacked—and those projects are something truly special.

This is the story of how I worked with a client in Mineral Point, Wisconsin to design cabinetry and storage systems for their new home—building organization directly into the bones of the space and setting them up for a lifetime of calm, functional living.

A Different Kind of Home Organizing Project

This project didn’t begin with overflowing drawers or cluttered countertops. Instead, it started with a phone call from a family in the early stages of designing their dream home in southwest Wisconsin. They had already done something many homeowners don’t…they paused long enough to ask an important question.

“How do we make sure our home stays organized—not just on move-in day, but for years to come?”

They understood that home organization isn’t something you tack on after construction is complete. It’s something that can—and should—be intentionally designed from the beginning. Rather than defaulting to standard cabinetry layouts, they wanted every drawer, cabinet, and storage area to reflect how they actually live. That’s where The Marshall Method came in.

Building Organization Into the Design Phase

When I first met with the family, we didn’t talk about spice racks, acrylic bins, and drawer dividers. We talked about life.

  • How they cook during the week versus weekends

  • Where groceries enter the home

  • How laundry realistically gets done

  • What slows them down at the end of a long day

  • Where backpacks, shoes, coats, and daily essentials tend to land

This kind of conversation is the foundation of intentional home organizing. Before you can design storage, you need to understand habits—and habits are deeply personal.

Together, we mapped out cabinetry and storage for the:

  • Kitchen

  • Butler’s pantry

  • Main pantry

  • Laundry room

  • Mudroom

Each space was designed to support real routines, not idealized ones.

Designing Cabinetry Around Real Life

Cabinets are, quite literally, the containers that shape how a home functions. When they’re designed without intention, even the most beautiful homes can feel frustrating to live in. For this Mineral Point home, every decision was purposeful.

Kitchen Organization That Works in Real Life

The kitchen was designed around workflow, not trends.

  • Deep drawers for pots, pans, and lids

  • Designated zones for prep, cooking, baking, and cleanup

  • Easily accessible storage for everyday dishes

  • Thoughtful placement of small appliances to reduce countertop clutter

This kind of kitchen organization system makes daily cooking smoother and long-term maintenance easier.

A Butler’s Pantry and Pantry Designed for Function, Clarity, and Calm

We designed a butler’s pantry to support meal prep efforts and help the family start the day off with a energy-packed breakfast. In the pantry we created a space where the parents can “shop” for ingredients when creating a healthy meal.

  • Functional placement of cabinets, appliances, and small appliances

  • Open shelving for quick ingredient gathering

  • Easy-access drawers making snack time effortless

  • Clear zones for baking supplies, meal prep, and staples

A well-designed pantry supports healthy habits, reduces food waste, and eliminates the “I forgot we had that” problem.

Laundry Room Organization That Reduces Friction

Laundry rooms often become clutter catch-alls—but this one was designed to work hard and be a calming oasis.

  • Storage for detergents and supplies right where they’re used

  • Dedicated space for sorting and folding

  • Cabinets designed to keep visual noise to a minimum

When laundry is easier to manage, it’s far less likely to pile up.

Mudroom Storage That Supports Daily Transitions

The mudroom was designed with one goal in mind: making coming and going effortless.

  • Individual storage for each family member

  • Drop zone for backpacks, shoes, coats, and seasonal gear

  • Surfaces, shelves, and/or drawers for keys, mail, and packages

  • Space for family command center board

This kind of family entryway organization sets the tone for the entire home.

The Result: Where Function Meets Beauty

When the design phase was complete, the family could already picture themselves living in the space—moving through their home with ease instead of frustration.

Their words say it best:

“Carrie’s ability to combine functionality with thoughtful design was remarkable. She took the time to understand our lifestyle and ensured that every item had a designated place, creating spaces that are both beautiful and practical. She anticipated our needs in ways we hadn’t even considered, and the end result has completely transformed how we plan to use our home.”

That feedback captures exactly what The Marshall Method is about. Organizing is not about perfection. It’s about support.

Why Intentional Home Organization Matters Long-Term

We often think of organizing as something reactive—something we do once clutter becomes overwhelming. But proactive organization changes everything. When storage is designed with intention:

  • Homes are easier to maintain

  • Daily routines feel lighter

  • Stress is reduced

  • Spaces adapt as life changes

This project in Mineral Point is a perfect example of how custom home organization can be seamlessly integrated into beautiful design.

What to Consider When Building or Remodeling Your Dream Home

If you’re planning a build or renovation—whether in Iowa County, Dane County, or beyond—here are five principles I encourage every client to keep in mind.

1. Think Beyond the Aesthetics

Beautiful finishes matter—but they’re only part of the picture. Ask yourself:

  • How will I use this space every day?

  • What typically causes friction or clutter?

  • Where do things naturally land?

Designing around real habits leads to functional home design that lasts.

2. Plan Storage With Intention

Storage should never be an afterthought. Thoughtful cabinetry design, built-in storage, and customized layouts allow every item to have a designated home—making organization intuitive rather than effortful.

3. Prioritize Flow and Function

Consider how spaces connect to one another.

  • Mudroom to kitchen

  • Laundry room to closets

  • Pantry to prep space

When flow is logical, your home works with you instead of against you.

4. Design for the Future, Not Just Today

Your life will change—and your home should be able to change with it. Flexible storage, adaptable layouts, and durable systems ensure your home remains functional for years to come.

5. Partner With the Right Experts

The best results come from collaboration. Working with a professional organizer during the design phase ensures that beauty and function are equally prioritized—resulting in a home that truly supports how you live.

Start Your Home Organizing Project With Purpose

Whether you’re building a new home, remodeling a kitchen, or simply rethinking how your space functions, organization is most powerful when it’s intentional. This Mineral Point project is proof that when organization is built into the design, the result is a home that feels calm, supportive, and deeply personal.
